There are 3 kinds of writing you'll read and 3 different purposes you'll use in your own writing.
1. Persuade: If you have an opinion, and you want to convince someone else you're right, or you want to talk someone into doing something, it is persuasion.
2. Inform: Informational text has facts and information in it. If you are explaining something or telling about something, you are informing them.
3. Entertain: Sometimes you read a story because someone told you "it's good" or funny, or scary. If this is the case, the author was probably trying to entertain you when they wrote it. If something interesting happened to you, and you tell someone about it, you are entertaining them as well.
